Farming Practices of Wishwell Farms

At Wishwell Farms, we believe the consumer deserves a choice to buy locally grown, fresh produce, at a fair price to the consumer and farmer.  We feel it is important for you to know where your food comes from and how it is grown.
Wishwell Farms understands that consumers, more than ever, are being more cautious about how there food is grown, specifically pesticide use.  Being conventional farmers our entire lives, it has been a learning process to change our farming practices. We have been slowly transitioning our growing methods and have incorporated some pesticide free growing practices into our operation, and we are continually learning how to rely less on synthetic fertilizers and pesticides.
Many of our vegetables are grown on raised beds with plastic mulch and drip irrigation, with some being grown on cover crops with no tillage to maintain the biodiversity within the soil and prevent top soil erosion.  We use a combination of compost and conventional fertilizers in our fertility program.  We still use some herbicides for better weed control and only spray synthetic insecticides and fungicides on our sweet corn and pumpkins. We feel that we can control most pests on our other crops using Bt's and other organically labeled crop protectants.
Although we are not organic or entirely pesticide free, we do understand why some patrons will insist on certified organic produce. We emphasize the importance of eating vegetables as a healthy way of living, supporting local farmers, and being upfront with our customers about our growing practices, and offering a diverse variety of great tasting produce picked fresh everyday on our farm. Offering beautiful looking produce is one thing, but having exceptional tasting produce consistently is another.  Choosing the right varieties to plant makes all the difference, and our customers have come to expect only the best from Wishwell Farms.
